These images were
captured using 35mm Kodak HIE Infrared film on a Pentax ME Super with a
#25 red filter on either a 50mm or 28mm lens and the ISO set to 400.
HIE is unique among films in both its aesthetic and the superstitions
around its use. Almost all of my pictures have been taken during long
(6-8 week) backpacking trips through Europe where refrigeration of
stored film is impossible. Apart from handing the film in total darkness
and storing it in Agfa 4-roll x-ray safes, I was unable to follow any of
the normal handling procedures. European security checkpoints refuse to
do hand inspection, so x-ray exposure is inevitable.
When shooting, I'd spend an entire day shooting a roll, then load it
back into the x-ray safe. I don't like shooting under pressure, as a lot
of my photos are "accidents" that I stumble upon. |
